Mark Bernardo
September 14, 2015 share   tweet   share

We’ve all experienced sticker shock while perusing the world’s most expensive watches. There are even a few brands for which six-figure price tags are the norm — “expensive watches” by almost anyone’s definition. But a handful of luxury watches go well beyond “pricey” and into the rarefied “million dollar watch” category, i.e., costing more than $1 million. We’ve compiled eight of the world’s most expensive watches, all breaking the $1 million ceiling, in which the only things grander than the complications are the price tags.

What’s the most you’ve ever paid (or thought about paying) for an expensive watch? Let us know in the comments section below!

The Hublot Classic Fusion Haute Joaillerie “$1 Million,” limited to only eight pieces, earns its $1 million price tag with the 1,185 baguette diamonds covering every surface of the watch, from the case and bracelet to the openworked dial. For the case alone, a 15-person team had to perform 1,800 hours of cutting and 200 hours of dimensional checking and quality control. Certainly one of the most expensive watches ever made by Hublot.

The Roger Dubuis Excalibur Quatuor finds its way to the million-dollar watches list thanks to its case, which is made entirely of silicon (according to the brand, the first such watch of its kind), a material with half the weight of titanium and four times the hardness. The Quatour — yes, the most expensive watch produced to date by Roger Dubuis — is equipped with the RD101 movement, notable for its four sprung balances, which work in pairs to compensate for the effects of gravity much faster than a tourbillon would, resulting in a more accurate watch. The Excalibur Quatuor is priced at 1 million Swiss francs (which translates to roughly around $1,125,000 U.S.).

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Hybris Mechanica à Grande Sonnerie has a retail price of $ 1,474,070. The watch boasts 1,300 parts, which make it capable of playing the entire Big Ben chiming sequence. It was released in 2009 as part of the Hybris Mechanica 55 trilogy, a trio of very expensive watches that comprised 55 complications altogether.

Reply Aaron April 7, 2016

99% would not know what you had hope you had a gold Submariner on one wrist and lang on the other 99 of 100 people wood would say the Rolex is the most expensive one and I am watches are a great way to hide cash and having significant amount available at any given time there are buyers all over the country that will pay cash on the spot for luxury watches and those watches are built by hand every part is made from a block of material there are not 2 alike and definitely do not depreciate like a million-dollar sports car most of those Ultra high-end watches appreciate in value I am going to leave my children my watch collection instead of cash that way the IRS can get their hands on my money that I already paid over 40% on and if they need some cash they I can sell a couple watches I actually quit my six-figure job 3 years ago and now I buy and sell pre-owned watches I sold 273 last year at an average profit of 638 per watch cash no trail and I did most of that in my boxers most people do not know where they can sell their watch people they pretty much think a pawn shop and most of them will wear it for 15 years not service it because they think they have to send it back to the manufacturer and spend two grand I also do all my exterior reconditioning the nice part is most of them have their initial depreciation and then they remain at that level for a long time and then they appreciate I bought a GMT Master Pepsi in 1990 msrp was under 5000 and that’s when there was thousands of Rolex dealers and fairly easy to get a 25% discount back then I sold it to a dealer who has a brick-and-mortar store he paid 5200 I found a 1940’s patek Phillipe in stainless steel with teardrop lugs at a local mom-and-pop jewelry store even had both the original boxes and they could only find ones in precious metals for sale generally steel ones appear at vintage watch auctions at Christie’s and Sotheby’s the only brand most people recognize is Rolex and to be honest I would rather wear a million-dollar Lange on my wrist then a gold Rolex or for that matter aNY Rolex. If you were in the wrong place the guy with the Rolex would be the first one to go and they wouldn’t even realize that they just let a million walk by my favorite thing to do is walk behind the three-figure millionaire and get his two-year-old watch that he is bored with for 30% of MSRP the only bad part is most of those guys throw away the boxes and papers and they don’t care if they lose twenty-five Grand a year on a watch I started about six or seven years ago buying high end watches as investment I know for a fact I haven’t lost a dime I probably have 5 to 7% return and should only increase with time that way when some dumb-ass blows up in National Monument I won’t lose 65% of my 401k however I found if you want to make money real money in watches it takes mid six figures to do that I bought an entire collection from a widow her husband was a Cardiologists she had no idea what she has but when I put 220000 in cash in front of her was it was almost impossible for her to say no if you were to buy the collection you it would be 4 – 5 million wholesaling to dealers one of the time will net 400,000-600,000 I offer a concierge service I will bring watches to the client I also will go to buy and I recondition in person so it never leaves the owners sight and the nice part is with no overhead I can offer more if needed plus the fact it is really only piece of jewelry for men what is the old saying if you can tell a lot about a man shoes and his watch see any difference to this versus a Salvador Dali lithograph you don’t put that in the closet you hang it on the wall 90% of the guys who had a very nice watch consider it a piece of art consisting of thousands of mechanical pieces no computers and built by a man with his two hands and is such a Precision instrument that runs virtually flawless plus the fact that a watchmaker is a Dying Breed in the US in the next few years it will be short almost 20,000 watchmakers to service the US portion of their business if this continues but they will become even more valuable because they were built by a human not by a robot 20 years from now Those of you complaining saying that you Fossil watch tells the same time I mean that’s saying a Toyota Camry is the same as a 600 series Mercedes-Benz is just as good they are just mad at themselves that they slept through half their college classes and blame everyone else my kids will have a seven-figure inheritance that is basically cash that no one knows they have and that’s all thanks to watches I don’t know how are you look at a movement and be astounded that it was made by a man with his hands a pair of pliers and a few other tools and is capable of running for a year and losing less than 5 min in the entire year there are very few things that are built with that tolerance and in a hundred years your car and computer will be dust and a watch will still be functioning and intact I have a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date from 1937 I put that in your left hand and a 2009 in your right hand be hard-pressed 2 pick the 70yr old one and the nice part is you always have cash on your wrist that you cant rob Peter to pay Paul compared to having five or six thousand in your savings and a majority of them are made from precious metals so even if you ran it over with a Greyhound bus it would have considerable value still you cannot barf on a Picasso or put a hole in it and still expect to have a good value there are very few things you can buy material items that retain considerable value tip of the week buy manufacturers watches that are produced with a modified ETA movement they are no longer providing cores for modification too other manufacturers they are only Supplying their manufacturers they are owned by Swatch so now the Browns are forced to find Cores elsewhere or produced their in-house movement that is what the majority of them are doing what happens then as people start buying the ETA once because parts are available anywhere 4 considerably less than in house parts Plus most watchmakers need to be trained on a new movement any watchmaker on the planet is capable of working on an ETA just about every manufacturer has used ETA movements in one form or another find me a simple logo on the rotor 2A complex modification not many do complex modifications most largest decorated too companies specs and they produce each reference and three different levels of quality you could have two watches both with the same model movement however one is worth 4 times as much difference being the materials in order to get cosc certified it has to be tested and not be affected by position or temperature the lower levels as you know metal expands and contracts with temperature those versions lose time or gane time if it passes certification that means it is of the finest quality beyond reproach every Breitling is certified most watch manufacturers do not certify every movement if you want to see the finest quality craftsmanship and an automatic watch that blows most Swiss ones out of the water look at a grand Seiko yes I said Seiko there is probably not a single Swiss watch that can compete with the accuracy off the grand Seiko they have only answered one swiss chronometer competition the Swiss ended before it was over with no explanation but everyone knows they couldn’t let a Japanese watch win a Swiss competition

You’re aware of the face that noone, absolutely noone on this planet, cares ? Your disgusting amounts of money are making you such a sad individual, who has to rant and write something that noone will read past the first 10 lines just to feel like you’re relevant, but the truth is my friend, that you and people like you are the disease of this world

Reply James January 18, 2017

I agree with you,

Reply Nick October 19, 2016

Aside from the lack of punctuation great write up man. Anyone who simply wishes to own a single high end watch should read it and they will save a tremendous amount on their 1st purchase.

Aside from that yes, if you spend the amount of effort you have on watches on any specialized commodity you will make money. Make sure to teach your kids how to check the worth of the watches you have or they’ll be that widow you took for a couple mill.

My wife gets angry at me when I explain to her that everyone is out to get your money when you have it, she doesn’t get it. Most people don’t. It’s crazy how easy it is to take people for a ride.

That stock broker would try to kill you if you took 25k out of his pocket but is fine with losing it on a watch because no one does the math.

Who cares if they tell the time? They are, a statement of the individuals cash worth. I collect watches and would if i could buy one of these artworks. (The wife wont let me remortagage the house or use the kids college fund lol) Its mo different to driving a rolls royce or owning a Picasso.

Reply Tom November 27, 2015

Reply Matthew Nguyen October 2, 2015

I was surprised that there wasn’t a Patek watch on the list. Also, I’m surprised that the Lange costs 2 million. I don’t see it costing 2 million. I see that Lange going for maybe in the hundred thousands max.

Reply Ronnie Robinson October 1, 2015

Reply dub September 26, 2015

$1M+??? I wouldn’t pay more than $800K for a watch.

Reply Virgil Howarth September 14, 2015

Even if I could afford a watch in this price class, it would not be any of these. Poor taste and vulgar excess is most evident in the majority of them ( the Lange and VC being the exception).

I guess I’m still satisfied with my 1962 Connie Pie Pan. Mid priced Seiko and Citizen watches do me just fine.

Sadly, or so I sometimes conclude, I am an addict. Yes I admit it. I should book into watches anonymous… If there were such a group. There should be as I am sure there are thousands of horilogical freaks out there. Sad but true.

In stark contrast it seems that this article has also attracted the disdain of many having very little if any knowledge of horology. In turn this lack of understanding has resulted in some sad responses.

For me, well I would love to be able to afford what for many of us is entirely unaffordable and will never be. However this doesn’t stop me from looking at watch articles online and in magazines 365 days a year.

I own a nice array of watches with the most expensive around 16k. IWC, Oris, Mido, Nick hacko, Longines, Frederique Constant, Brera, Glycine, Ebel, Ritmo Mundo, Seiko, Maurice Lacroix, U boat, Baume et Mercier, to name a few.

I am far from wealthy rather I expend on a passion. That I can’t afford a 1m dollar watch does little to quash my enthusiasm for achieving such Heights in horology. I am a realist though and as much as I love how manufacturers push the design envelope, should I have that sort of money to spend on toys I would invest in various supercars.

I would love a Patek, A Lange etc, and maybe one day I will be able to afford say a $30 40k watch. But I believe for the average enthusiast there has to be a limit.

I am not and will never be in the league of the rich and famous. I am middle class and sadly this has resulted in very few of my peers ever recognizing or in fact understanding the quality of watch I am wearing.

So let’s give the wealthy their due. If they can afford such watches I applaud them for gaining the wealth to do so. If You can’t afford such expensive tastes, stay away from things you don’t understand. Don’t waste your comments as they are not welcome.

Leave horology freaks like me to enjoy our passion. You go and enjoy your passion and we won’t take pot shots at what you love.

Reply wolf2188 February 3, 2015

Sir, I understand where you are coming from. I would sell my Grandmother into slavery to be able to own one of those watches. I am also a watch freak. I own probably twenty watches and I still look at the newest innovations of watches. my biggest love is Skelton watches. we can dream cant we?

Reply quatablu March 26, 2016

cuspub, I also am a horology lover. Just because one can afford such an expensive timepiece does not make them overindulgent. A find watch is like a nice hat, or nice suit, or a nice pair of shoes, if they can afford them and they feel good in them, I say: go for the gusto. my watches are in the LeWalmart, SeKamart or the Gearbest category, they look nice, they keep good time and I am proud of them so, do not down people that have worked hard all their lives and have made something of themselves, and they like expensive things. BowWow

Reply Ngawang Tsering January 1, 2015

It May be a brilliant piece of art but the truth is, its waste of energy and money….

Reply BonoM December 27, 2014

Reply Spiros December 24, 2014

Incredibile watches and hands on to those masterminds who created them. To all those who complain about the cost of these watches I can only say that the words ” affordable” and ” expensive” are relative to your income. Thank God there are people who can buy these watches and in order for them to buy you need a genius to design them and another genius to execute!!! If this does’nt happen the world will turn flat!!!!!

Reply mengesha December 20, 2014

Why are we worried about expensive watch. Expensive in which sense? For sure is he not more expensive than this watch?

But i’ll love to tell you this that you can still earn your money if you present this to a good national museum/ national theatre and nine you, the government can only be convinced only if are creative too in show casing what you have. To say but few i don’t think a good rational homo economicus will love to spend his money on a product like this. well i still see another opportunity in it, if you know you (individuals) you have the money that you feel is getting too much for what your private or company accounts can accomodate, then you can go for it and store it with your bank as valuable deposits under the agreement of receiving interest at a certain rate. Thanks

Those of you who’re dissing mechanical watches don’t have our passion for horology, and that’s cool; to each their own. ( 1 ) It’s a great hobby. ( 2 ) One doesn’t have to be a multimillionaire to collect; many mechanical watches can be had for the price of a good quartz watch, less in many instances. (3) Quartz watches have no soul.

Just matter of time before Apple/Google/Samsung finally come out with an e-watch that will put 90% of the watchmakers out of business. Of course these high-end watchmakers will still be around, making these luxury watches for people with too more money………….
